Group Discussion Starters – 2 Peter 1:12-21
Have someone in your group read 2 Peter 1:12-21. As a group consider the following questions:

Peter is concerned that his readers are confident in their faith, and so he feels it right to always remind his Christians friends while he lives. Read Hebrews 10:23-25 and discuss the importance of this behaviour for all believers to have toward one another.

Consider your week, have you taken on the role of reminder and encourager to other Christians?

Peter says that he knows he will soon put off his “body” or “earthly dwelling” or literally “tent”.  Why would Peter use the word tent to describe his body?

Have someone read 2 Corinthians 5:1-4. It is interesting to note that Peter assumes his readers have read Paul’s letters (see 2. Peter 3:15). Discuss the comparison they both make between our earthly dwelling and our heavenly dwelling.

Have someone read 2 Corinthians 15:53-57

Death is an issue that in our culture is often avoided in conversation, or softened by euphemisms yet in the Bible it is frequently mentioned. How should we approach the issue of death as we share our faith?

Peter says that he is going to put off his body “just as our Lord Jesus made clear to me.” Read John 21:18-19 to gain some insight into Peter’s comment.

Peter was in prison and knew he was soon going to die, but his thoughts were not for himself, he wanted to finish his life strong and leave a legacy of gospel knowledge behind. What is the focus of your life in the time you have left? What is the most important thing you can leave the people you love?
