I don't think Jesus needed to use any of his abundant spiritual gifts in order to know ahead of time that Christians would struggle to have healthy relationships. So he takes a fair amount of time to outline what forgiveness is going to look like in the church, and the process he gives his disciples, although simple, reveals some surprising obligations and preparations we have to embrace in order to get forgiveness right, and the pitfalls of getting it wrong.
