Introduction to 1 Peter
Life Group Discussion Starters
As the author of this letter Peter has much to say about suffering, recall some of the suffering Peter faced in his life. (Matt 26:70-74, John 21:18-19, Acts 5, Gal 2:11-14)
Some of the suffering was physical persecution, but how else did Peter suffer in ways common to all Christians?
Compare Peter’s behaviour during his time with Jesus and at His death with his behaviour after Jesus rose. (Acts 2:14ff, Acts 4 and 5)
Read all of 1 Peter chapter 1 together. Ideally, have one or two people in the group read aloud slowly while others follow in their bibles.
As you read notice what verses strike you as particularly meaningful and true. Also note which verses seemed confusing or unclear.
Discuss among the group the passages that struck people as most meaningful and why.
Discuss some of the more unclear verses and look for cross-references in your bibles that may help clarify those texts.
If there is still time you might consider as a group why Peter would address the readers of his letter as “aliens”. What makes them aliens in their own culture? Do you ever feel like an alien, and when do you feel it most?
