Hope In Our Salvation
Group Discussion Starters – 1 Peter 1
Peter starts off the letter with an amazing reassurance of the mercy of God, our new birth made possible by Jesus, an imperishable inheritance, and the power of God guarding us until we reach it.
Then verse 7 says that our proven (genuine) faith “may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” However the context does not make it clear who is receiving the praise glory and honour. Is it Jesus? Or us? Discuss each interpretation and if either or both are valid.
Verse 8 says “Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him…” Considering the author of the letter, why is this a particularly encouraging remark to these Christians?
What did the prophets of old testify about? (verses 10-11)
When they searched their own prophecies, what where they told? (verse 12, and Matt 13:17)
According to verse 13, on what do Christians set their hope on?
To encourage these Christians, Peter immediately makes the truth about God’s nature and His promises to us the bedrock of their hope. Have a few people share a time in their life when a particular promise of God, or their faith in His nature was the source of their hope.
