A smitten rock, a bronze serpent, sustaining bread... as Jesus hung on the cross and crowds of onlookers lifted their eyes to see him, very few could comprehend what was taking place. The looked, but they could not see. Jesus was not struck for His rebellion but for ours. It was not Jesus that needed rescuing, but we who need saving. It is not Jesus in danger of perishing, but those who look on the cross who need the bread of life.
