Group Discussion Starters – 2 Peter – God’s Patience Until The Day Of The Lord
Divide the reading of 2 Peter 3 among three or four people. Make a note of difficult verses or questions you have as the chapter is read so they can be discussed later.

Peter again states his purpose, as he sees his own time on the earth grow very short he is earnest that his readers pay attention to the words of the prophets, Jesus, especially as it relates to the judgement of God.  And he warns them to pay no attention to false teachers.

What will scoffers be saying in the last days? (3-4)

But how does Peter say “the day of the Lord” will come? (9)
What will happen when that day comes? (9)
Read Malachi 4:1-2

Compare the difference of effect in the last day between evil-doers and those that fear God. Should believers fear or anticipate the day of the Lord?

Since all these things will be dissolved, what should we believers do do? (11-12)

What is awaiting those who follow Jesus? (v13)

Read Revelation 21:1-8 to see John’s vision of the future. What part of this description especially captures your imagination? What do you anticipate (or fear) about the certainty of that day?

In 2 Peter 1:10 Peter says we can confirm our “calling and election” as God’s people. In chapters 2 and 3 it becomes obvious in very serious terms why that is important.
Since Peter says we know all these things now, what encouragement does he give us? (3:14-15)
