Our Vision
It is the hope of the local churches of Haliburton County that individuals and families could enjoy a drive-by tour of our beautiful region, while taking time to reflect and prepare our hearts for this season of Lent and Easter, by celebrating the sacrificial love of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection with a “Stations of the Cross Tour”. Individuals and families can tour around our local, participating churches to view various works of local art that represent the story of Jesus’ Journey to the Cross, in chronological order, according to scripture. This year, a group of Jesus-loving, local artists of varying ages and abilities created pieces for the tour in a way that honours the Christian tradition of Lent and Easter, celebrates local art, and offers a unifying community event for all to enjoy. The hope is that each year new, budding or established, local, Christian artists will continue to contribute art pieces to guide us along the Way of the Cross, through this tour. Now, more than ever, Jesus’ offer of love and hope is so relevant during the times of isolation we experienced over the course of the pandemic and with all the political turmoil in our world today. This intersection of faith and art is intended to be a light shining in dark times. Join us in honouring and celebrating the life-changing power of our Lord Jesus’ life, death and resurrection through this community event. May you be blessed!
What are the stations of the cross?
Stations of the Cross, also called Way of the Cross, a series of 14-16 pictures or carvings portraying events in the Passion of Christ, from his condemnation by Pontius Pilate to his entombment. The images are usually mounted on the inside walls of a church or chapel but may also be erected in such places as cemeteries, corridors of hospitals and religious houses, or on mountainsides. The devotional exercise of visiting and praying in front of each of the stations and meditating on the Passion of Christ stems from the practice of early Christian pilgrims who visited the scenes of the events in Jerusalem and walked the traditional route from the supposed location of Pilate’s house to Calvary. Prayerful meditation through the Stations of the Cross is especially common during Lent and on Fridays throughout the year, in commemoration of Christ’s Crucifixion on Good Friday. The devotion may be done individually or in a group and is particularly important in Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran traditions. Each station is commonly visited with some variation of the prayer “We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you. Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world” and with a reading from a relevant passage of Scripture. (https://www.britannica.com/topic/Stations-of-the-Cross)
