Dead In Our Sin
If we have cancer, we need a proper diagnosis and a surgeon. Without a clear-eyed understanding of our condition we will never get treatment, or get better. It doesn’t do us any good to pretend things are different than they really are. So after a long encouraging opening to his letter, the Apostle Paul unpacks some bad news about the world and our spiritual condition, not to discourage us, but to point us toward the help we need. The truth of our being “dead in our sin”, that we can do nothing to save ourselves is a truth often misunderstood and misapplied. So today we unpack the doctrine of “total depravity”, or “complete inability” to make sure, like a surgeon’s scalpel, we are using this powerful truth for it’s intended purpose, and not misusing it to our harm.
