Group Discussion Starters – 2 Peter 1:1-11

Have someone in your group read 2 Peter 1:1-4. As a group consider the following questions:

What phrase does Peter use to describe who he is writing to? How does it identify who he intends the information in the letter is for? Look at 2 Peter 3:1 for another clue to who first received the letter.

Verse 4 says that those who he is writing to have been granted God’s promises. Consider promises such as:

Romans 10:9, Jeremiah 29:11

Romans 8:1-2, James 4:7

Psalms 34:17, Proverbs 22:6

John 14:27, Philippians 4:19

Share with the group some promises of God have you found helpful to you in “life and godliness”.

Verse 4 says we escape “the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire” (or lust). Again pay attention to Peter’s wording. Is Peter saying that the things in the world are corrupt* themselves?

What makes the things of the world corrupt?

What are some examples of things in the world that are good, but that become corrupt because of our wrong desires?

Read 2 Corinthians 4:6

God has granted us knowledge, power, and promises for our transformation. How can you put those into practice in your life this week?
