Tamar
3000 years before the #metoo movement, before hashtags and social media, before Weinstein and Spacey it was God who lifted the curtain to expose the ugly violence and potential of institutionalized silence with regard to abuse. He exposed the most powerful people and the most favoured family in Israel to make an example of them for centuries to come. 2 Samuel 13 and the story of King David’s daughter Tamar is preserved for us as a warning that the people of God are not immune from this sort of violence, and that it must never be harboured, covered, or kept silent. The church is meant to lead the world, not follow, in being a place of safety, transparency, accountability, justice and mercy.
